A Glasgow father of two, who will run seven marathons in seven days next month, completed the Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday to raise money for vulnerable children.
Robbie McKenzie finished the iconic race on Sunday in two hours and fifty-nine minutes and is raising money for The Children’s Society – a charity that works with young people affected by violence, trauma, and poor mental health.
Having already raised £1,167, he will attempt to run 7 Marathons in 7 Days across Glasgow to raise even more money for the charity starting on the 2nd of November.
As the father of two young daughters, aged five and two, Robbie says becoming a parent transformed the way he sees the world and influenced his decision to fundraise for The Children’s Society.
“Ever since becoming a dad, my entire outlook on life has changed. Not just in terms of my own children, but other children too. You become much more aware of the challenges some young people face and how important it is that they have people looking out for them.”
“The Children’s Society immediately stood out to me, it really connected with me on a personal level.” He said.
Before taking up running, Robbie spent several years working with young offenders in a secure unit, an experience that gave him first-hand insight into the difficulties many vulnerable children encounter.
“The young people I worked with had experienced incredibly challenging circumstances stayed with me.
“I know how important it is that organisations like The Children’s Society are there to support children when they need it most.”
“The support I’ve received has been amazing, knowing people are backing me and the reasons why I am doing this makes it all worthwhile.
“I’d also love to inspire other people, it doesn’t matter how fast you are or where you start, if you can challenge yourself while helping a cause you care about, you are doing something really special.”
CEO of The Children’s Society, Mark Russell, said:
“Robbie’s challenge is an extraordinary test of determination, commitment and endurance. Every penny he raises will go toward vulnerable children and young people through one of our many services.
“People like Robbie make a real difference to the lives of children and I hope his achievements inspire others.”
